The Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery and CIC forge a partnership for transmission and citizenship

Designed in cooperation with the Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (National monuments center), the exhibition “Dare to be free ! Figures in the fight against slavery« [provisional title] will help pass on the memory of slavery to all audiences. The exhibition will start in October 2023 and end in February 2024.

“CIC wishes to contribute to the memory of slavery and its teaching alongside the Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery. It is crucial to ensure that the history of the past is shared with as many people as possible for a better understanding of it.” says Daniel Baal, Chief Executive Officer of CIC.

By supporting this citizen initiative, CIC is contributing to a better understanding of this global system, particularly in its economic and financial dimension and its contemporary legacy.

This exhibition will be a reminder of how much our values have been nourished by the struggles against slavery and for equality, especially in Haiti during the revolution. In this year, which is the 220th anniversary of the death of Toussaint Louverture, I am delighted that the Crédit Mutuel group is committed to sharing this story with the general public,” adds Jean-Marc Ayrault, Chairman of the Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery. The two institutions are working together to identify scientific, cultural and educational projects on these issues that could be supported in the future, and to seek ways to involve other French economic and financial partners who share the same desire with this approach to memory, culture and citizenship.

On May 24, 2022, the Foundation welcomed CIC’s decision to fund independent academic work to better understand CIC's and other European and global financial institutions’ 19th-century ties to the National Bank of Haiti, following a New York Times journalistic investigation.
